![]() Maybe this post will help one of you avoid “the scam”. I feel sorry for the other people who got duped also. Can’t remember too many other public launches where you have to pay to launch either. Liked a lot about cedar key but won’t be returning. Judy even told me someone would be there in a golf cart to direct me. And no if Judy would have told me to jump off a bridge I wouldn’t have been interested but in this case I followed her instructions. Go back to “Judy”, “well I can’t do anything for you.” The police chief and mayor didn’t want to understand that “Judy” the person who should know and at least should warn me, was solely responsible for the advice. Get back from fishing and an officer has written me a citation. So I park in a no parking area as others have. I get to 3rd street and see trailers everywhere including the no parking areas. Here is the scam.the lady at the boat launch tells you to go park “anywhere” on 3rd street. I did park where I shouldn’t have and I saw at least three others with boat trailers like I had with citations. But on the last day I got my first parking ticket in 50 years. Fishing was good, our rental at Fillmore was satisfactory and we ate like kings/queens at the condo. We ask that you please stop back in to see us again, and we assure you, your experience will be vastly different! As you can see from our previous Trip Advisor Reviews, this is not a normal experience here in the Welcome Center. We only have one staff person during the week, due to our limited budget This is no excuse, and this is not to excuse the behavior, it is to explain why you had such a terrible experience. ![]() An artsy, fun place that has some neat restaurants and attractions. It is what a friend termed what Key Largo used to be. The day that you are referring to was also a very hectic day, and the staff person had a sick child, as well, that forced the Welcome Center to close early. Octoroscoe The fun island community of Cedar Key (see our first article here) is to date our favorite Florida Gulf Coast Beach town. That is the reason for our sign stating "Lunch Hour Varies". On that day, the staff was already on her way out to take the one break of the day that is given when you arrived at 11:45. ![]() We have discovered there is not a good set time that there is a lull. Cars can find parking on the street nearby. Our sincerest apologies with your experience! Our Welcome Center is staffed 10-4 Monday-Saturday, but since we are unable to gauge properly when visitors will actually walk in, lunch is typically taken when it can be taken. If you bring your own kayak, head for the boat ramp and city beach, which are adjacent. Located on the highway into town: Cedar Key Paddling. On the town beach: Cedar Key Adventures. There are two main kayak outfitters in town with comparable pricing: Because you are paddling over open water, you shouldn’t do it in high winds or if lightning is present. Keep in mind if you are planning to kayak to Atsena Otie, you should check the wind and weather. They are another mile away over open water and the interior of these islands is closed to the public. There are additional islands in the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, but these are not common kayak destinations. If we had completely circumnavigated the island in our kayak, we could have easily spent more time – and probably observed more birds and wildlife. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)Īlthough you can paddle to and from Atsena Otie in less than an hour, we spent three to four enjoyable hours on this outing. Birders will see cormorants and more around Atsena Otie. ![]()
